When starting or finishing your language classes at Hutong School you will most probably pass by these two restaurant sisters. Bird and Bitter are located at 50 Wuyuan Lu, and 58 Wuyuan Lu, near Changshu Road. Bitter restaurant on the left, offers coffee and snacks by day, cocktails and more by night. A place for pre- or after-dinner drinks would be Bird restaurant on the right. Bird is a small place with only 20 seats, which gives the restaurant a cozy atmosphere. Bird has a revolving menu of sharing plates and an emphasis on “wine with interesting stories”. The venues and menus are separate, but there's some obvious back-and-forth action going on. You can go to one or the other, or both and get the full package. Bird’s menu is a simple one-page card with 8-10 dishes, a few more snacks, and a chalkboard of daily specials. These will change every second week. It is always an “event” eating at Bird, as the menu switches every two weeks. The food and wine are always excellent. There is a great team behind these venues, who care deeply about what they put on the table. And it really reflects in the atmosphere, the hosting and of course in the lovely food they serve.
